Today’s 31 Days of Halloween entry is short and sweet, and comes in the form of two quick answers from author/editor Nick Mamatas, the man behind the novels Move Under Ground, The Last Weekend and I Am Providence, as well as several others. If you haven’t sampled Mamatas’ fiction yet, which straddles the genres of horror, sci-fi and fantasy, I recommend starting with the recently released I Am Providence (available from Night Shade Books) and working your way back.
That said, if you are looking for some quality advice about making it the writing biz, do check out his non-fiction book Starve Better, from Apex Publications, which is jam-packed with it.

31 Days of Halloween… with Nick Mamatas
In your opinion, what is the all-time scariest horror novel or short story?
The scariest short story I’ve ever read is “Without a Mind” by Joel Lane. It’s about tiny ephemeral anti-people observed by a pair of not-very-ethical or honest police officers, and it ends with a quiet, horrifying, subtle image that has as much to do with the most human of actions—sex and birth—as it has to do with the supernatural.
